[who we are]

Beta Clothing Designs Inc. creates stylish, functional, and affordable performance fashion(TM) for urban athletes and active lifestyles. Every single stitch of our clothing is proudly designed and manufactured in Canada using eco-friendly materials and socially responsible methods.

Beta Clothing Designs was established in 2001 by David Smith, an avid rock climber and OCAD graduate of the Industrial Design Program. During his many climbing road trips he began to recognize a need for attractive yet affordable clothing that you could wear out to the cliffs or out on the town during these long haul adventures; they would ideally minimize your luggage and maximize your cash flow. 

Additionally, involvement in a sport that puts individuals in such close proximity to nature meant that whatever clothes he produced would have to be uncompromising in terms of their eco-footprint. All these factors helped inspire an uncompromising vision of where Beta’s clothing needed to go.

By combining our passion for outdoor adventure with our love of urban culture, Beta fuses sunshine with neon, crag with concrete, street style with sport performance. Going beyond street wear, beyond sportswear, Beta has bred a whole new beast that represents the evolution of multi-functional, urban sportswear.

[the ecology]

In our relentless pursuit of changing the landscape of sportswear, we refuse to cut corners: we’re committed to using only the highest quality fabrics, materials and treatments that have the least ecological impact. Designed and manufactured in Toronto, Beta truly thinks globally by acting locally.

Making our clothes “eco-friendly” is not a choice; it is simply the ground zero, the foundation we build on. It would be easier for us to make clothes without fabric than make them without a conscience.

[not cashing in]

Choosing stylish, eco-friendly apparel should not be a sacrifice, it should be a reward. In that spirit, Beta chooses to surrender its bottom line in order to offer great clothes at a reasonable price because we’ve been there, wearing that one awesome top or pair of funky shorts until it’s warn out because money and margins were tighter than a pair of bike shorts on an elephant. At Beta, we believe looking good and eating should never be mutually exclusive.

[beyond the rest]

In an industry defined by mass production and volume, and style over substance, Beta Clothing Designs Inc. wants to have the smallest footprint while making the greatest impact. The result of every small choice we make is reflected in the clothing we produce, and in the people that choose our brand.

[what's in a name]

The name Beta itself is a climbing term that describes the information given to a climber to help them successfully climb a route. “Beta” helps climbers attain new heights and the concept inspired us to push past traditional views of what athletic apparel can aspire to, and create a company, a clothing line, and a brand that are truly beyond everything tried already.
